Fast, accurate simulation of the cervical spine

NeckSIM, a plug-in module to LifeMOD™, automatically creates a detailed cervical spine model and separates it into individual vertebral segments and disc forces. NeckSIM is being used in such diverse applications as detailed crash effect determination, surgical evaluations such as fixation or fusion, and medical implant design.

Building a NeckSIM Model

Simply launch LifeMOD and enter height, weight, gender, and age to build the base segments of the human model. Once the complete skeletal system is created, select the NeckSIM module. Intervertebral forces are selected and applied, and NeckSIM segments the model into each cervical vertebra and creates appropriate disc forces. A standard set of ligaments and Hill-based muscles are scalable using any of the six anthropometric databases. Alternatively, the output can be personalized by importing specific bone geometry data.

With a NeckSIM-enabled LifeMOD simulation, users can apply the standard LifeMOD inverse and forward dynamics process, then study results and initiate designs for a specific solution or therapy for the cervical spine. NeckSIM has been validated against published frontal, side and rear impact data, as well as high-speed laboratory footage of crash tests involving crash test dummies.

Accurate, extensible, and built on industrial-grade simulation technology, NeckSIM is readily integrated into existing computer-aided engineering (CAE) workflows. NeckSIM imports and exports complex product geometry from most computer-aided design (CAD) systems, including CATIA, Pro/E, SolidWorks, Unigraphics, and others. It also easily imports engineering-formatted data from MRI and CT scans.

LifeMOD’s powerful post-processing capabilities make it simple to create clear, concise reports and attention-grabbing presentations, complete with animations, plots, and charts, allowing stakeholders to truly grasp the ‘what, why, how and when’ of an implant’s performance .
