Orthopaedic Research Laboratories, Inc. Selects LifeMOD/KneeSIM as a Total Knee Replacement Testing Standard for the Entire Orthopaedic Industry

New industry testing standard to be based on LifeMOD/KneeSIM

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – October 30, 2006 — Biomechanics Research Group Inc., the leading global provider of biomechanics simulation tools and services, today announced that Orthopaedic Research Laboratories, Inc. (ORL) of the Cleveland Clinic Health System, the leading laboratory for orthopaedic device and surgical technique advancement, has purchased LifeMOD/KneeSIM™ to develop a new testing protocol to evaluate total knee replacement (TKR) systems for the entire orthopaedics industry.

LifeMOD/KneeSIM is a 3-D, dynamics, physics-based modeling system that simulates in vivo functional activities for the purpose of evaluating the kinematic and kinetic performance of TKR designs. ORL, Inc. is currently using finite element based analysis to assess wear of TKR systems. To advance testing capabilities, LifeMOD/KneeSIM will be used to characterize functional performance enabling the team to provide data to the Food and Drug administration, orthopaedic device makers, and the orthopaedic surgeon community. The functional performance data will help patients and surgeons to identify orthopaedic implants best suited to meet each patient’s unique requirements.

ORL will be able to quickly and efficiently conduct each functional performance test as KneeSIM is highly automated and has already captured industry standard processes to support TKR research. “Our goal is to provide the best possible data to enable our community to advance orthopaedic devices and surgical practices to achieve the best possible care for patients.” said A.
