New Smith & Nephew Total Knee Replacement System Wins Acclaim with the Help of LifeMOD/KneeSIM
Smith & Nephew Journey Knee Systems wins “best in show” notice at the 2006 AAOS meeting in Chicago
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – November 1, 2006 -- Biomechanics Research Group Inc., the leading global provider of biomechanics simulation tools and services, today announced that the Journey total knee replacement system, which was developed with LifeMOD/KneeSIM™ as a major tool in the design, receives acclaim at the 2006 annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Chicago.
The Memphis Business Journal states, “Wachovia Capital Markets reported that the best new product was the new Journey knee replacement system and is likely to take its biggest bites from competitors DePuy and Zimmer”.
The innovative JOURNEY anatomical knee system is designed to move and feel like a normal knee, and addresses problems still found in conventional systems such as instability and limited flexion. To replicate normal knee function, Smith & Nephew conducted in-depth analyses of natural knee kinematics and the inherent limitations in knee replacement systems. LifeMOD/KneeSIM played a key role is this investigation. “Utilization of the LifeMOD™ software has allowed us to better characterize and optimize our knee designs, and gain a greater understanding of the physics behind how the human knee works”, states Brian McKinnon, one of the lead engineers on the Journey Knee Program. "We chose to partner with BRG because of their experience, technology, and expertise in the area of applying virtual product development engineering to human activity.”
LifeMOD/KneeSIM is a 3-D, dynamics, physics-based modeling system that simulates in vivo functional activities for the purpose of evaluating the kinematic and kinetic performance of TKR designs. LifeMOD/KneeSIM has evolved greatly during a 4 year engagement with Smith & Nephew to become an integral component in the design process. "We are delighted to be able to contribute to a product which will produce great yields in patient comfort and satisfaction,” states Shawn McGuan, Founder and CEO of BRG. “This is the exact reason we are in the business.”
